The right of public access

Take nothing - leave nothing

The swedish "right of rublic access" (allemansrätten) is an old custom. The right of public access means that you are allowed to sojourn in the nature, even on private land. With this right comes a responsibility. The right of public access can be summarized in the "take nothing - leave nothing" rule. Feel free to roam around, but do not cut of brances of living trees, do not leave litter or fireplaces, respect the nature and other people. Respect the privacy
Although you are allowed to hike and put up a tent in natural areas, you are not allowed to walk or camp in peoples back yards or too close to private houses. Also, respect signs saying Privat on jetties and fences.

Motor vehicles
Motor vehicles are not comprised by the right of public access. Motor vehicles are not allowed off road.

Camping
You are allowed to put up a tent for one day, if you don´t put it up on agricultural land or too close to dwellings. If you want to make shore you are allowed to put up the tent, ask the  landowner.

Boating
You are allowed to drive a boat everywhere, except where special law or regulations forbid it. If you want to stay over night, the same rules as for camping with tents. Make sure you know what rules are in force for protected areas such as national parks or bird sanctuaries.

Littering
Do not litter! When hiking, bring your litter back to the closest garbage bin.

Picking
You are allowed to pick berries, mushrooms and wild flowers. Make sure that you don´t pick protected flowers, like orchids, or plants that are rare or threatened. Cuttiong branches, twigs or bark from living trees and shrubs is not allowed. You may pick branches and twigs that have fallen to the ground.

Dogs
Dogs must be kept on a leash between Mach 1st and August 20th to protect the wildlife. You are always responsible for your dog and its actions. Make sure the dog does not harm or disturb wildlife.

Hunting and fishing
Fishing and hunting are not included in the right of public access. Fishing with hand gear is allowed along the Swedish coastline and in the five largest lakes, except for Salmon fishing along the coast of Norrland. For all other waters there are local rules and you must have a fishing permit.
